If you are a beginner looking at a crochet or knitting pattern for the first time

your eyes will roll What the hell does it say Traditionally these patterns

Use abbreviations. I will explain in detail what they mean.

Special tip: When you start learning the art of crocheting, it’s a good idea (to be less confused) to write what the abbreviations mean in long hand. After I have printed out a pattern, I write with a long hand in the margin what the abbreviations mean. Use this table to decode the crochet or knitting pattern code!

Bet – between

BL / bk lp – loopback (s)

BLO – only loopback

bo – bobble

BO – set

BP – back post

BPdc – double crochet back post (s)

BPsc – Back Post Single Crochet (s)

BPtr – triple crochet back post

CB – color B.

CC – contrast color

ch (s) – chain (s)

ch-space = previously created space

ch- – refers to a previously made / machined chain

ch-sp – chain space

CL (s) – cluster (s)

cm – centimeters

What does the asterisk (*) mean when you see it in a crochet or knitting pattern?

It is used to show you how often the instructions have to be repeated. It also indicates how often to repeat.

What do the () brackets mean when you see them in a crochet or knitting pattern?

If you see this in a pattern, it means that you are doing what the pattern says immediately afterwards. Example (sk2p). Parentheses are also used to provide additional information.
